OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
Occupational therapy is a related service provided to students with disabilities to meet their educational needs in the school environment. Assessments and classroom observations are administered to determine a student’s social/emotional, sensory, motor and visual perception skill levels as it relates to their school performance.
Occupational Therapists help preschool and school age children gain functional skills that promote independent participation in their daily school activities. These highly qualified and licensed professionals work closely with educational teams to identify and service students with motor deficits in a school based setting. Direct, consultative and/or monitoring services also may be provided as determined by the IEP team.
Therapists may assist with providing recommendations for accommodations/ modifications and assistive technology interventions in general education classrooms.
Goals are developed to promote independence with school-based activities for:
- Preschool play based activities
- Writing/drawing/keyboarding
- Attention
- Organization of school supplies
- Sensory and movement activities
- Assistive technology
- Active participation in music, art, recess and gym
- Daily living skills for feeding, hygiene, dressing, fastening clothing/shoes, toileting and basic homemaking tasks
- Prevocational and vocational activities
