SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGY

Our school psychologists focus on student needs to help them succeed emotionally, socially, and academically. Highly trained in both psychology and education, their role is collaborative with the individuals in a student's education and home life to establish healthy, safe, and supportive learning environments.

School psychologists use various strategies to create and improve a student's support system and address student needs. School psychologists may work individually with students or in groups and may develop programs to assist teachers and parents in their support roles for students.

Other roles that school psychologists may have in supporting their students include:

  • Consultation
  • Evaluation
  • Intervention
  • Prevention
  • Research and Planning

GETTING HELP FOR YOUR STUDENT

Parents/guardians can request help from a school psychologist for educational purposes. The school psychologist can provide connections to other professionals or agencies additional help if a request goes beyond available resources or professional duties.

School psychologists can help students cope with or manage:

  • Academic performance skills
  • Emotional and behavioral regulation skills
  • Social skills
  • Time management skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Motivation

ASSESSMENT FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION

Assessment for Special Education services is an involved and often lengthy process. Parents have a right to assessment at public expense if there is a suspected disability. The assessment must be completed within 60 days to determine whether the child meets the definition of a disability, whether their needs exceed the curriculum and resources of regular education, and what services are recommended to help their child make reasonable progress.
